Chromoly shaft upgrade (Yukon, RCV, Ten Factory) increases torsional strength ~50% over stock and adds 1310/1330 U-joints for 33"+ tire reliability.

Stock Dana 30 axle shafts are 27-spline 1023 carbon steel with 297 U-joints. These work fine for stock-to-31" tires but twist or shear under aggressive trail use with 33"+ tires. Upgrading to chromoly shafts is the single biggest reliability gain for a D30 running larger tires.

Option tiers:

30-spline shaft upgrade: some chromoly shaft kits include 30-spline outers, which require a 30-spline locker or carrier. This is the path for a serious D30 build.

Bigger U-joints: 1310 is the next size up from stock 297; 1330 is larger still. Bigger U-joints handle more torque but reduce steering angle slightly because they're physically bigger.

Install: requires pulling the axle shafts (cotter pin, axle nut, brake/rotor, knuckle disassembly). 4-6 hours per side first time. Pair with new ball joints (do them while you're in there).
