Jeep Wrangler Unlimited LJ

The Long-Wheelbase Wrangler.

Three model years, a 10-inch-longer wheelbase than the TJ, and a Dana 44 rear axle standard. The LJ Unlimited keeps the coil-sprung 4.0L formula but rides better and carries more — which is why it became the cult-favorite Wrangler the aftermarket never stopped supporting.

Death Wobble Diagnosis

The LJ shares the TJ's coil-sprung, track-bar-located front axle, so it gets the same death wobble when a front-end joint wears. The violent shake after a bump at speed is the symptom; a worn track bar, tie-rod end, or ball joint is the cause. Find the worn part before you drive it again.

Cold Air Intake for the LJ 4.0L

A cold air intake is the easiest and cheapest performance modification on the 4.0L — remove the airbox, install the intake tube and cone filter, done in an hour. Expect a 5–8 horsepower improvement and noticeably crisper throttle response, particularly at highway speeds. The 4.0L responds well because the factory airbox is restrictive by design; a less restrictive cone filter and larger intake tube frees up the breathing.

Dual Battery and Charging System Upgrade for the LJ

The 4.0L's factory alternator outputs 90 amps — adequate for a stock Wrangler but increasingly strained as you add accessories. A winch can draw 400+ amps at load, LED light bars pull 10–20 amps continuously, and a fridge or compressor adds another 5–15 amps. Running all of this off a single starting battery and a marginal alternator is the path to a dead battery in camp and a surprise winch failure mid-recovery. A dual-battery system with proper charging is the fix.

Fender Flare Upgrade for Wider Tires on the LJ

The LJ's factory fender flares are the same style as TJ flares — a molded plastic lip with about 3.5 inches of coverage past the fender lip. They clear stock 30-inch tires with room to spare and 31s without rubbing at stock height. Go to 33s and you'll be cutting or replacing them. Go to 35s and you'll need a lift, flare replacement, and possibly front fender trimming regardless of flare style.
