Chrysler 8.25 Gear Set

Difficulty 5/58–15 hrs$400–6501997-2001

Optional rear axle on some XJs (mostly 1997-2001 with tow package). Stronger than D35, weaker than 8.8 / D44. 29-spline. Regear is straightforward.

The Chrysler 8.25 was the optional rear axle on 1997-2001 XJs with the tow package or specific trim levels. Ring gear is 8.25" — meaningfully larger than D35's 7.625". Semi-float axle shafts (not C-clip), 29-spline.

Strength: middle ground. Handles 33" tires comfortably, 35" with care. Not as strong as the Ford 8.8 (which is 31-spline and uses larger bearings) but a major upgrade over the D35.

Ratios available: 3.07, 3.55, 3.73, 3.92, 4.10, 4.56, 4.88. The 4.10 and 4.56 are most common for XJ regears.

Vendor options same as D30/D35: Yukon, Motive, USA Standard. Master install kit important — bearing preload is finicky on the 8.25.

Identification: cover shape is distinctive — somewhat oval with a flat bottom. Differential cover bolt count is 10 (vs 10 on D35 — but the cover shape and ring gear visible through the fill hole confirms 8.25).

Lockers available: ARB, Yukon Grizzly, Powertrax Lock-Right.

When 8.25 is the right answer: you already have one. The 8.25 doesn't justify a swap-in (the donor is rare in junkyards). If you have a D35 and want to upgrade, go to 8.8 or D44 instead.
