Popular XJ rear swap from Ford Explorer. 31-spline, disc brakes, often comes with a limited-slip. 4.10s common from donor. Cheap power for 33-35" tires.

The Ford 8.8 from a 1995-2001 Ford Explorer is the most popular junkyard rear axle swap for the XJ. The Explorer 8.8 has:

Donor selection: 1995-2001 Ford Explorer/Mountaineer. Avoid Ranger 8.8 (different width, drum brakes). Some V8 Explorers came with 4.10s — the dream donor for 33" tire builds. Most Explorer V6s have 3.27 or 3.73.

Cost: $300-700 for a donor axle from a pull-a-part. Bracket kits (Iron Rock Off Road, Tom Wood's): $80-150. Gears if regearing: $300-500 plus master kit.

Regear: same as any D44-class axle. Yukon, Motive, USA Standard. Master kit important.

Disadvantages:

The 8.8 is generally the smart-money choice for XJs that need a stronger rear but don't want D44 cost. Strength is between 8.25 and Dana 44 — easily holds 35" tires.
