Swap in WJ (1999-2004 Grand Cherokee) or TJ Wrangler front seats for upgraded comfort/leather. WJ seats use similar bolt pattern but need bracket modification.
The XJ front seats are flat, unsupportive, and stock cloth wears out. Popular swaps:
(1) WJ Grand Cherokee (1999-2004) leather seats: power adjustment, lumbar, optional heated. Mounting brackets are similar but bolt spacing is slightly different — most builders weld new tabs to the WJ brackets to match XJ floor pattern, or use Hanson Off-Road / Iron Rock adapter brackets ($80). Wiring power: requires running +12V constant and ground; heated seats need switched +12V via relay.
(2) TJ Wrangler seats (1997-2006): closer match dimensionally, brackets are similar but require minor mods. Less plush than WJ.
(3) ZJ Grand Cherokee (1993-1998): also a fit, leather + power. Slightly wider; fit is tight against center console.
(4) Aftermarket: PRP, Mastercraft, or Corbeau racing/off-road seats with custom XJ brackets from Genright/Savvy. $500-1500 per seat — overkill unless you're a hard wheeler.
Don't bother with: minivan seats (don't fit), Volvo seats (too wide), most modern car seats (airbag occupancy sensors complicate).
Airbag note: 1995+ XJ has airbag sensors in the dash, not seats — so a non-airbag seat swap is generally OK from a safety perspective. Side airbag-equipped donor seats (WJ Limited) won't deploy because there's no harness.
