Gauge Cluster Illumination LED Swap

Difficulty 2/51–3 hrs$30–801991-1995, 1996, 1997-2001

Replace the cluster's 194-style bulbs with LEDs to brighten dim gauges. 1991-2001 cluster uses T5/T10 wedge sockets that accept LED 74 or 194 polarity-correct bulbs.

After 25+ years, the XJ gauge cluster looks like it's powered by a candle. The cluster uses small wedge bulbs (74 or 194 depending on year) in twist-lock sockets. Replacing them with LEDs gets you a bright, modern look but requires care:

1) Remove the cluster bezel (4-6 screws) and pull the cluster (4 screws + a connector).

2) Identify each socket — there are typically 4-6 illumination bulbs and several indicator bulbs (the indicators should usually stay incandescent because their factory colored caps are tuned for filament color; LEDs through a colored cap can look wrong).

3) Use LED 74 wedges from Superbright LEDs or Diode Dynamics — these are polarity-sensitive. Test, and rotate 180 degrees if it doesn't light.

4) Choose color: factory was greenish-blue (~3000K incandescent through teal cap); white LEDs look harsh. Many builders match by using natural white (4000K) and replacing the factory cap, or by using a teal LED.

Some owners replace all the bulbs AND the indicator bulbs with LEDs of matching color (red for brake/charge, amber for turn signals, etc) for a complete refresh. Allow 1-2 hours and budget $30-60 in bulbs.

Dimmer compatibility: the XJ dimmer rheostat works with LEDs but the dim range is narrower since LEDs don't fade smoothly like filaments.
