Replace dim factory incandescent dome and map bulbs with LED replacements. ~$15 in bulbs makes the cabin actually usable at night.
The XJ has incandescent bulbs in the dome (rear of headliner), map lights (in mirror or overhead), cargo light (rear of headliner), and license plate lights. All are manageable LED swaps:
LED color: pick natural white (4000-5000K) not 'cool white' (6000K+) which looks blue and harsh. Sylvania Zevo, Diode Dynamics, and LASFIT all make good ones for $5-15 each.
BONUS: install a hardwired LED strip under the rear cargo trim. Adhesive 5050-LED 12V strip ($10), wired to switched +12V (cargo lamp circuit) or aux fuse block. Adds usable cargo lighting that the single factory bulb can't match.
Note: do NOT install LEDs in the dimming dash-cluster bulbs without verifying polarity. Some cluster LEDs need a specific orientation. See gauge cluster illumination entry.
