Roof-mount 50" light bar on factory rain channels or roof rack. Watch the XJ 75 lb dynamic roof load — most bars are 8-15 lbs which is fine, but combined with a roof rack and gear can exceed it.
Roof bars throw light farther than bumper bars (higher = more horizon range) but create more glare back at the driver from dust/snow. They also add wind noise.
Mounting options on XJ:
(1) Rain gutter clamps (Rola, Yakima, Garvin): clamp directly to factory rain channels. Bolt-on install, no drilling. Limited to ~50 lbs total at the channel.
(2) Roof rack crossbars: most aftermarket racks (Smittybilt Defender, Garvin, Gobi) include bar tab mounts.
(3) Inner windshield channel / A-pillar: brackets that bolt to factory A-pillar hood hinges or use the windshield-frame mount.
Wiring: run wire under the headliner across the roof, down the A-pillar, into the engine bay. Use a grommet through the firewall — many builders use the existing firewall pass-through next to the brake booster.
CAUTION: the XJ's roof is a 75 lb dynamic / 150 lb static load. A 50" light bar (~12 lbs) plus a roof rack (~40 lbs) plus a 30 lb tent rapidly approaches the limit at speed. Reinforce the roof with interior bracing if you're hauling a rooftop tent + bar.
