Engine Bay Component Layout by Year

Difficulty 1/50 hrs$01984-1990, 1991-1995, 1996, 1997-2001

Renix layout (87-90) different from HO (91-95) different from late HO (96-01). Knowing what year you have helps with parts and diagnostics.

Visual identification by year is essential for parts ordering. Renix (1987-1990): tubular cast intake manifold, separate Renix coil mounted on driver inner fender, multi-V-belts, no PCV from cap (vented oil cap instead), valve cover with oval rocker indent, MAP sensor on firewall driver side, batch-fire fuel rail with no return-less option. HO (1991-1995): long-tube cast aluminum intake manifold, coil mounted directly on top of distributor, single serpentine belt, MAP on firewall passenger side, OBD-I diagnostic connector under hood near brake booster, distributor with cap and rotor. Late HO (1996-2001): same physical engine layout as 91-95 with the addition of OBD-II port under dash, coil rail (no distributor cap/rotor) integrated with distributor housing on the front of the engine, secondary air injection on some California emissions models, more emissions equipment (purge solenoid, NVLD module on later years). When ordering electrical parts, always specify model year and check the VIN's tenth character - aftermarket sites list parts by year, not VIN, and overlap can cause confusion.
