Stock XJ drag link uses thin tubing and rubber-bushed TREs that wear quickly under bigger tires. HD drag links use forged TREs and heavier tubing for resilience.
The drag link runs from the pitman arm to the passenger-side knuckle. It absorbs every steering input and every bump that pushes the wheels. Stock XJ drag links are adequate for stock tires but fail under 32" and larger tires, often bending in a hard hit or wearing the end joints in 30-40k miles.
HD drag links from Currie (CurrectLync), IRO, RuffStuff, and Synergy use thicker DOM tubing (1.25"-1.5") and forged tie rod ends with greaseable joints. Currie's CurrectLync is the most popular ($240 for drag link + tie rod kit). The IRO HD drag link is similar at $180.
For lifted XJs running 33s+, an HD drag link is part of the death-wobble prevention package alongside HD tie rod, HD track bar, and ZJ steering box. Stock drag link bent at all = replace immediately.
Install: bolt-in. Use a pickle fork or tie rod separator. Set length to match factory toe (measure stock length before removal). Final alignment at a shop.
