Stock XJ tie rod bends with 33"+ tires and aggressive steering input. HD tie rods use 1.25"+ DOM and forged ends to survive trail use.
The tie rod connects the two front knuckles and absorbs the toe-in load. Stock XJ tie rod is thin tubing and bends easily under impacts (curb hits, rock contact, big tires turning at slow speed). A bent tie rod immediately causes toe-out, wandering, and tire wear.
HD tie rods use 1.25"-1.5" DOM tubing and forged tie rod ends. Currie CurrectLync (sold as a drag link + tie rod kit), IRO HD tie rod ($150), RuffStuff 1-ton tie rod ($200). The 1-ton tie rod option uses larger 1-ton truck tie rod ends and is the strongest, but requires drilling out the steering knuckles for the larger taper or using a sleeve.
For lifted XJs running 33s+, HD tie rod is essential. For 35s+, 1-ton tie rod is recommended. Inspect after every hard trail run — even HD tie rods can bend in a hard hit.
Install: bolt-in for standard HD; drilling required for 1-ton. Set length to match factory toe. Alignment after install.
