Fox 2.0 Internal Floating Piston shocks — monotube, 2" body, deserved their reputation as the trail upgrade above Bilstein. Smooth, fade-resistant, premium.
Fox 2.0 IFP shocks are 2" body monotube shocks with an internal floating piston separating the oil from the high-pressure gas. This eliminates cavitation under hard use and lets the shock run cooler than twin-tube designs. Fox 2.0 is a step above Bilstein 5100 in build quality, oil capacity, and trail performance.
For the XJ, Fox 2.0 IFPs are available in many configurations. The most common are PN 980-24-924 (front, 0-2" lift) and similar PNs across lift heights. RockKrawler and IRO offer Fox-equipped lift packages. Stand-alone shocks are ~$140-180 each ($560-720 for a set of 4).
Fox 2.0 IFPs excel at moderate trail use — rocky desert, slow rock work, washboard. They will resist fade better than Bilstein 5100 on a 100-mile washboard day. For hardcore rock crawling and competition use, step up to Fox 2.0 with remote reservoirs (which add cooling capacity).
Downside: cost. A full set of Fox 2.0 IFPs costs as much as a budget lift kit. Maintenance: shocks should be serviced (re-oiled, re-charged) every 30-40k miles for best performance, though many run them until they fail.
