9-position cab-adjustable dampers. Lets you switch from soft daily comfort to firm trail in seconds; popular in the early 2000s, still solid.
The Rancho RS9000XL is a twin-tube shock with 9 manual valve positions (turn the knob at the top of the shock to select damping firmness). Position 1 is soft (highway comfort), position 9 is firm (off-road, heavy load). Cab-adjustable upgrade kits route control cables to a dash-mounted dial.
For XJ daily-driven-trail builds, the RS9000XL is the best value adjustable shock. Mount in stock-to-4.5" lift configurations; Rancho lists application charts for each lift height. Twin-tube construction means they run hotter than Bilstein monotubes — for sustained washboard, they will fade where Bilsteins won't. But the adjustability is huge for builds that switch between street and trail.
Pricing is $70-90 per shock, often sold as full sets of 4 with the cab-adjustable kit for $400-500. Build quality is good but not premium; expect 60k-80k mile life.
Note: Rancho RS5000X is a fixed-valve sibling and is the cheap option. RS9000XL is the adjustable one. The newer RS7000 is Rancho's mid-tier nitrogen shock.
