Running 33" Tires on the Tacoma — 285/75R16 and 295/70R17 Fitment

Difficulty 1/51–2 hrs$900–15002005-2015, 2016-2023

285/75R16 (33.8" diameter) is the sweet spot for the lifted Tacoma — fits on 2" of lift with minor trimming of the front mud flap bracket, runs cleanly on 2.5"+ lift, and delivers meaningful off-road capability over the stock 265s.

The 285/75R16 measures 33.8" in actual diameter on most brands — slightly taller than the commonly referenced "33s" designation. On a 2" lifted Tacoma, these tires will contact the front mudflap bracket under full compression and full lock. Trimming that plastic bracket — a 10-minute job with a razor knife — eliminates the rub. On 2.5"+ of lift they run cleanly without any modification. The 295/70R17 (33.5" diameter) is the 17" equivalent; it needs a minimum of 2.5" lift for clean clearance and 3"+ on the 2nd gen Tacoma's narrower front fender opening.

For 2nd gen Tacomas (2005–2015), the inner fender liner can contact 285/75R16 at full compression on aggressive terrain. Pulling the liner slightly inward or trimming the leading edge of the liner prevents this. It's a minor fix but worth doing before trail use. The 3rd gen (2016–2023) has a slightly wider front opening and handles 285/75R16 more gracefully, often with zero trimming at 2.5" of lift.

Tire selection matters as much as size. The BFG KO2 remains the benchmark all-terrain option — balanced street manners, proven off-road traction, and long tread life. The Falken Wildpeak AT3W punches above its price point for wet traction and rock grip. Toyo's Open Country AT3 is quieter on-road with comparable off-road performance. If the build is trail-focused over pavement-focused, the Nitto Ridge Grappler (a hybrid AT/MT pattern) in 285/75R16 is worth considering.

At 33" diameter, the Tacoma's speedometer will read approximately 3–4% low with stock gear ratios on a 2nd or 3rd gen. This does not require a re-gear unless you're towing heavily or adding 35s. If you're running 33s and noticing labored acceleration or slipping between gears on highway climbs, check the final drive ratio against the tire diameter using a gear ratio calculator before committing to a re-gear.
