Toyota gears the Tacoma tall from the factory (often 3.91, or 4.30 on V6 autos), so going to 33s or 35s drops it into a hole — sluggish off the line, hunting gears, and a tired-feeling drivetrain. The fix is a regear: 4.88 for up to 33-inch tires, 5.29 for 35s. Front (clamshell) and rear must match. This is a precision differential-setup job; budget $2,500-$4,000 done at a shop, and unless you already set up gears, pay a specialist — a mis-set pinion depth means a howling diff and a redo.

A regear restores the engine RPM and effective gearing you had on stock tires after you've added weight and rolling diameter. On a Tacoma it matters more than on most trucks because Toyota's stock ratios are tall and the 3.5L (3rd gen) makes its torque high in the rev range. Put 33s or 35s on without regearing and the truck feels gutless, the transmission shifts constantly hunting for a gear, and fuel economy often gets worse despite the bigger tires.

Match the ratio to your tire, not your ego. 4.88 is the right call for stock-size up to a 33-inch tire — it recovers the launch and cruising RPM you lost and keeps highway revs reasonable. 5.29 is for 35s, or for 33s if you do a lot of slow technical crawling or heavy overland loading and want extra mechanical advantage. Going 5.29 on 33s makes the truck feel lively but raises highway RPM. The 2nd-gen 4.0L (1GR-FE) and the 3rd-gen 3.5L (2GR-FKS) both respond the same way to this math; the difference is the 3rd gen's taller cruising gear makes the regear feel even more worthwhile.

The Tacoma uses an IFS front clamshell third member and a solid rear (Toyota 8", or the 8.75" found on 3rd-gen TRD trucks with the e-locker). You must regear both axles to the same ratio — a mismatch binds the drivetrain in 4WD and destroys parts. Buy front and rear ring-and-pinion sets plus a master install kit for each (bearings, crush sleeve, shims, seals). If your rear has the factory e-locker, keep the locker carrier and add friction modifier per the gear oil spec.

Differential setup is about thousandths of an inch: pinion depth, backlash (typically around 0.008-0.010 in), and bearing preload, all verified by reading the gear-mesh pattern with marking compound. Get pinion depth wrong and the diff howls; get preload wrong and the bearings fail early. A shop that sets Toyota gears regularly will do front and rear in a day and stand behind the pattern. DIY can save roughly $1,500 in labor, but only attempt it if you own a dial indicator and a press and have set up gears before. A common middle path is to pull the front diff and rear third member yourself and hand only those to a gear shop, which cuts the labor bill.
