TRAILMANUAL
Jeep Wrangler JL · Buying decision tool

Should you buy a JL, which years, or stay on a JK?

It comes down to four things, checked in this order: the trailer you'll tow, whether you need rear-row curtain airbags, the payment you'll accept, and whether you already own a built JK. Answer those below. The tool rules out anything that fails a hard requirement before it scores what's left, and shows every fact it used.

The short version: only 2024 and newer Wranglers have rear-row curtain airbags, a trailer over 5,000 lb points to a Gladiator, and if neither applies a late JK usually wins on cost, especially when you already own a built one.

The rules, in the order they decide

Stop at the first one that applies to you. The tool below runs the same checks with your own numbers.

  1. A real trailer. Loaded over 5,000 lb: a Gladiator (Rubicon automatic 7,000 lb, Sport with Max Tow 7,700 lb). Between 3,500 and 5,000 lb: a 2024+ 4-door Wrangler Rubicon with the automatic, factory 4.10 gears and 33-inch tires, the only JL rated above 3,500 lb, and only as built. Under 3,500 lb: every 4-door JK and JL is rated for it, so towing doesn't decide.
  2. Rear-row curtain airbags. Only 2024 and newer. No JK and no 2018–2023 JL has them, and they can't be added.
  3. Rear vents and the newer cabin, without the airbags. A 2019–2023 JL Rubicon has rear console vents, the 8-speed and the newer interior for less than a 2024.
  4. Your payment ceiling. Decide whether it covers the Jeep alone or everything, then price private-party and dealer separately. A car loan can't pay for parts you install yourself.
  5. Otherwise, a late JK. A 2014–2018 JK Rubicon that passes inspection is the cheapest route to a finished rig, and the only one where a built JK's axles, armor and lift move over.

The 4xe sits outside these rules: it's in play once its battery-fire and loss-of-power campaigns have final remedies and a clean record after them. Details in the 4xe recall guide.

What moves from a built JK to a JL

Almost nothing structural carries over. Wheels, tires, a winch, lights and loose gear move; armor, suspension, axles, steering, tops and doors are JK-specific. A built JK owner moving to a JL should plan on re-buying armor, lift and steering.

Recalls to check before you buy

These are population documents: they tell you which builds are covered, not whether a specific Jeep has been repaired. Run the VIN at nhtsa.gov/recalls, which shows open recalls only, and ask for the dealer service history to see completed work.

How the tool decides

Hard requirements first. An option that fails your trailer weight, curtain-airbag requirement, payment ceiling, cash limit or 4xe condition is ruled out, not scored lower. A tow rating that hasn't been confirmed for the exact configuration shows as "verify," never as a clean pass.

Then a weighted score. Each surviving option gets 0–100 on seven criteria: a finished rig at your tire size, net cost to get there, the monthly payment, rear-seat safety and comfort, towing headroom, your wrench hours, and value if plans change. You set the weights. The score is a measure of fit with your priorities, not a reliability rating or a probability.

Money is counted once. Net cost is the purchase, tax and fees plus the build to your tire size, minus parts you'll actually sell on that path. Parts you keep are never also counted as sold. Selling your current vehicle funds the purchase; it doesn't make the Jeep cheaper. Part-out money funds the build first, because a lender only finances what's on the bill of sale.

What would change the answer. The tool re-runs your inputs with one thing changed at a time (the airbag requirement, a trailer, tire size, who does the work, your payment ceiling, the weight presets) and lists any change that flips the result.

Common questions

Which Jeep Wrangler years have rear-row curtain airbags?

Only 2024 and newer. From model year 2024, first- and second-row side-curtain airbags are standard on every Wrangler JL trim. No JK (2007–2018) and no 2018–2023 JL has curtain airbags in either row, and they can't be added later.

Can the 2024 Wrangler's curtain airbags go off on the trail, and can you turn them off?

The 2024 owner's manual says the side curtains are designed to deploy in certain side impacts and lists front and side impact sensors; it doesn't mention rollover deployment, and it describes no switch to turn the side or curtain airbags off. Its doors-off and top-off procedures don't mention airbags either. That's what the manual documents, not a guarantee about every event, so if an off-camber deployment would rule the Jeep out for you, ask Stellantis directly. The manual also warns against roof changes that could affect the curtains and against aftermarket side steps or body-structure changes.

What parts move from a built JK to a JL?

Wheels and tires (both are 5x5, but plan on new TPMS sensors), the winch, auxiliary lights and loose gear like radios and a Hi-Lift jack. Axles, suspension, steering, armor, the rear bumper, tops and doors don't fit. Some JK front bumpers bolt to a 2018–2020 JL with adapter brackets; fit on a 2024 is unconfirmed.

Is the 2018–2023 JL Rubicon rear axle a problem on 37-inch tires?

It can be. The 2018–2023 Rubicon rear is a semi-float Dana 44 (M220) held by C-clips, and rear shaft failures on 37s are a documented owner pattern. The 2024+ Rubicon, Rubicon X and 392 use a full-float Dana 44 HD rear, which carries the Jeep's weight on the axle tube so the shaft only sees torque.

How much can a 2024 Wrangler Rubicon tow?

5,000 lb, but only a 4-door Rubicon with the automatic, 4.10 gears and the factory 33-inch LT285/70R17C tires, on the 2.0L turbo or 3.6L. A manual Rubicon, a Rubicon on 4.56 or 4.88 gears (including the 35-inch Xtreme 35 package), the 392 and every 4xe are rated 3,500 lb, and every 2-door 2,000 lb. The 2024 owner's manual many owners quote shows 3,500 lb because it was printed before the Rubicon row was added. Jeep publishes no rating for a lifted, regeared build, and armor and bigger tires eat into payload and tongue-weight margin.

Should I buy a Wrangler 4xe after the recalls?

Only if you're comfortable with what's still open. As of October 29, 2026, the battery-fire recall (68C) and the engine casting-sand recall (78C) have remedies available for Wranglers, but the over-the-air power-loss recall (A7C) has only an interim fix and NHTSA's loss-of-power investigation (RQ24-012) is still open. Stellantis said in January 2026 it would drop plug-in hybrids starting with the 2026 model year. If you buy one, check every campaign by VIN, get proof each remedy was done, and confirm the extended battery and engine warranty applies to that vehicle.

When is the best time to buy a used Wrangler?

Late November through February has the best odds of a deal, and May through early July the worst, according to iSeeCars' study of more than 39 million used-car sales. It measures how often deals happen, not how big they are.
