Stock XJ has a thin transmission skid that bends easily. Aftermarket replacements use 1/4" steel to protect AW4/AX15 pans and the NP231 transfer case.
The stock XJ transmission/transfer case skid is a thin steel pan that bends on first contact with a rock. The aftermarket replaces it with 3/16" or 1/4" steel that survives real impacts. Some kits combine the transmission and transfer case skids into one piece; others are separate.
Good options:
Install: replace the stock skid (4-6 bolts depending on year and trans). Bolt-in. ~1-2 hours.
Note: 1984-1990 XJs with the BA10/5 (Peugeot) or AX5 manuals have different skid options. 1991-2001 with AW4 automatic or AX15 manual share most skid designs. Verify fit before ordering.
Most effective when combined with a belly-up kit (which raises and protects the entire belly area).
