The XJ front Dana 30 is a low-pinion C-clip-style axle with 27-spline shafts and 7.125" ring gear. Solid stock, capable up to ~33s with shaft upgrades and a locker.
All 1984-2001 XJ Cherokees came with a Dana 30 front axle. The axle has a 7.125" ring gear, 27-spline outer axle shafts, and uses U-joints (no CV joints). Two variants exist: 1984-1995 had vacuum-actuated CAD (center axle disconnect) for 2WD operation; 1996+ moved to a non-disconnect design with both shafts always driving.
Stock D30 limits:
Tires: 31"-32" with stock shafts and U-joints; 33"+ requires chromoly shafts and bigger U-joints for reliability.
Power: handles the 4.0L easily; no issues.
Lockers: lunchbox lockers work fine; ARB Air Lockers are excellent. The carrier breakpoint is 3.55 or numerically higher (you need the lower carrier for 4.10s/4.56s/etc.).
Weaknesses:
1996+ non-disconnect uses press-fit ball joints that wear; replacement is annoying.
The unit bearings (1996+) wear; aftermarket replacements (Timken, SKF) last longer than parts house.
Gear ratios available: 3.07 (rare), 3.55 (most common 1996+), 4.10, 4.56, 4.88, 5.13. Gear setup requires a specialized shop or experienced DIY.
The D30 is widely considered to be a strong, well-mannered axle. Most XJ builders run a D30 through 33s and only swap to a Dana 44 when they go to 35s+.
