Replace a worn XJ drag link to eliminate steering slop, wandering, and an off-center wheel — the most common steering linkage failure on these Jeeps.
The drag link is the long bar connecting the pitman arm to the passenger-side steering knuckle, and on the XJ's inverted-Y linkage it does most of the steering work. When the ball studs at either end wear, you get play at the wheel, wandering at highway speed, and clunks over bumps — and a loose drag link is one of the standard death wobble contributors. Check it by grabbing the link with the wheels on the ground while a helper rocks the steering wheel: any visible movement in a joint means it's done.
Why it works
Removes the largest single source of steering play on a worn XJ — the difference on the highway is immediate
Inexpensive insurance against death wobble; worn drag link joints are a top contributor
One of the more approachable front-end jobs: no springs under load, no alignment rack required to get home safely
While you're under there, you can inspect the tie rod, track bar, and ball joints with everything already loose
Trade-offs
Tapered studs that have lived through 25+ years of rust can fight hard — budget time for the puller and the torch-adjacent swearing
Fitment varies by year: the 91-01 link (DS1046) doesn't interchange directly with 84-90 Jeeps, so verify by year before ordering
If the tie rod and track bar are also worn, replacing only the drag link moves the slop instead of eliminating it — assess the whole linkage first
Steering wheel centering by sleeve adjustment takes a couple of test-drive iterations to get right
