The 3"–4" lift is where the TJ starts performing like a trail rig — but it also introduces geometry problems that a quality kit must address to drive right on the road.
At 3.5" of lift the TJ genuinely transforms. You gain clearance for 33" tires without fender trimming, meaningful flex improvement, and a ride height that holds its own on moderate trails. The problem this lift height introduces — and that distinguishes a good mid-tier kit from a budget one — is caster angle correction and track bar geometry. As the axle drops away from the body, the front axle's caster angle decreases, causing wandering and poor return-to-center steering. Every quality kit at this level includes adjustable upper control arms or cam bolts for caster correction.
The OME 3" kit is the overland standard for a reason. Old Man Emu builds their coil rates around real-world load calculations, and the Nitrocharger Sport shock is a genuine upgrade over most stock units. The TJ OME setup delivers a controlled, comfortable ride on pavement that budget kits rarely match. It's not the most aggressive lift — 3" is the stated height — but OME spring rates are consistent and predictable over time, and they don't sag the way soft budget springs do after 30,000 miles.
Rubicon Express's 3.5" Super-Flex kit leans toward articulation over on-road comfort. The Super-Flex mono-tube shocks and modified spring rates produce noticeably more droop than the OME setup, which pays off on technical trails with uneven terrain. The kit includes a track bar drop bracket and adjustable front upper control arms for caster correction. If you're building for moderate trail use over pavement comfort, this is the better choice. Rough Country's 4" kit rounds out the tier with more lift height for less money — the N3 shocks are serviceable, but plan to upgrade them if you push the rig harder than light dirt roads.
At any lift over 2.5", plan to add an SYE kit for the NP231 transfer case. Without it, the slip yoke output causes driveline vibration above 45 mph that gets worse with lift. It's not an emergency fix, but it's a known issue you'll want to budget for.
