35" tires fit under a TJ at 2.5" of lift with minor trimming, and clear at 4" without touching the fender — but re-gearing is non-negotiable if you want them to drive right.
The TJ was designed for tires in the 29"–31" range. Moving to 35s changes every aspect of how the rig drives: it raises the effective gear ratio (making the engine work harder), stresses the front Dana 30 and rear axles harder on rocks, and adds rotating mass that slows throttle response and hurts fuel economy. None of that is a reason not to run 35s — it's the honest picture before you spend money on tires.
Fitment at various lift heights: at 2.5" of lift, 35x12.50R15 tires will clear the fender at full droop but will contact the inner fender liner and sometimes the LCA skid at full flex. Light trimming of the inner fender liner is required for daily driving clearance. At 3.5"–4" of lift, 35s clear cleanly without trimming under most conditions — some builds still trim the factory corner flares to eliminate any potential contact at full stuff. At 2" of lift (budget lift), 35s will rub under hard compression turns; the setup is manageable on-road with careful driving but not appropriate for trail use at full flex.
The stock 15" wheel bolt pattern (5x114.3 / 5x4.5") makes tire selection genuinely convenient — 15" LT tires in 35x12.50 are among the most commonly produced trail sizes, and most major brands offer multiple compounds in this fitment. Stick with a 3.75"–4" backspacing wheel to avoid contact with the control arms. A wheel with less backspacing (more offset outward) will improve clearance but stick out past the fender flares, which is a tire coverage issue in some states.
On re-gearing: the TJ stock 3.73 ratio with 35" tires is noticeably sluggish at highway speed and has poor low-end torque for rock crawling. The accepted answer is 4.56 gears for 35s or 4.88 for 35s on a dedicated trail build. Budget for re-gearing when you buy the tires, or you'll be doing it anyway six months later.
