The Bilstein B8 5100 set is the correct budget lift for non-KDSS 4Runners — a direct replacement of the factory shocks that delivers 1.5"–2" of lift and meaningfully better damping without touching the suspension geometry.
The 5th gen 4Runner (2010–2024) comes in two suspension configurations: non-KDSS (SR5, Limited, and base trims) and KDSS-equipped (Trail Edition, TRD Pro, and some Limited packages). KDSS stands for Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System — a hydraulic sway bar linkage that passively adjusts front-to-rear roll resistance for trail articulation. Standard coilovers and spacer lifts are not compatible with KDSS because the KDSS system requires specific shock valving to function correctly. Before ordering any budget lift, confirm whether your 4Runner has KDSS by looking under the front and rear for hydraulic cylinders connecting the sway bar end links to the axle. Non-KDSS 4Runners have a conventional mechanical sway bar.
For non-KDSS 4Runners, the Bilstein B8 5100 is the cleanest budget approach. The 5100 is a monotube shock with a height adjustment collar on the front units — set to roughly 1.75" of lift front and use the preload-adjusted rear to match. You get improved damping, the lift, and no geometry compromise at this height. The Icon Stage 1 spacer lift is an alternative that uses a urethane spacer above the OEM spring — it lifts by 1.5"–2" but keeps the factory shock, which is fine if the factory dampers still have life. The Rough Country kit is the lowest-cost option but uses lower-quality dampers and is not recommended for builds that will see regular trail use.
At 2" of lift on a non-KDSS 4Runner, the factory UCAs are operating at their outer geometry limit but don't yet require replacement. Caster changes are manageable. For anything above 2", UCAs become necessary on the 4Runner as on the Tacoma.
