The 5th gen 4Runner's factory bumper sits low with a full-width plastic chin that reduces approach angle — a steel replacement improves the geometry, mounts a winch properly, and adds the recovery infrastructure the factory design lacks.

The ARB Summit Bar is the premium choice for the 4Runner and the most commonly specified bumper on serious build threads. It's full-width, designed to accept a Warn or Mile Marker winch in the integrated plate, and includes mounting provisions for OEM fog lights and parking sensors. The weld and finish quality is class-leading at this price point. It is not a light bumper — the Summit Bar adds approximately 80–100 lbs — but on a 4Runner that is carrying expedition gear, the additional mass is already in the budget.

Parking sensors are present on most 5th gen 4Runner trims from 2010 onward and the position varies by trim year. Most quality bumpers include sensor relocation brackets and drilling templates. Confirm your specific trim's sensor configuration (number of sensors and position) against the bumper manufacturer's compatibility chart before ordering. CBI, ARB, Expedition One, and Fab Four all offer sensor-compatible designs — some require minor drilling to accept the OEM sensor housing, which takes 20 minutes and is not an obstacle.

Full-width vs stubby is an approach-angle trade-off. Full-width bumpers protect the outer fender edges on brush and tight trail situations. Stubby bumpers (used by some Fab Four designs) improve the approach angle by removing the outer wing sections — the result is 3°–5° more approach clearance at the cost of the outer fender protection. For rock crawling, stubby is often preferred. For overland and mixed use, full-width is more practical.

The improvement in approach angle from any of these bumpers over the OEM unit is roughly 5°–7° on the 4Runner. The OEM bumper's low chin catches on exit lips and ledge faces that an aftermarket bumper clears. That's a tangible difference on moderate rocky terrain.

Steps

  1. Confirm trim and parking sensor configuration — check driver's manual or count OEM sensors in factory bumper
  2. Order bumper with appropriate sensor kit for your trim
  3. Disconnect battery negative terminal
  4. Remove OEM bumper: typically 6–8 bolts along top edge plus lower support brackets
  5. Remove fog lights and wiring harness from OEM bumper; set aside
  6. Remove parking sensors from OEM bumper; transfer to new bumper using provided drilling template
  7. Transfer fog lights into new bumper housing
  8. Test-fit new bumper with all wiring in place before torquing any hardware
  9. Bolt bumper to frame using supplied hardware; torque to spec (typically 70–90 ft-lb)
  10. Reconnect all lighting and sensor wiring; reconnect battery
  11. Test all lighting, sensors, and camera function before closing up
  12. If installing winch: complete winch installation on bench before bumper install — more manageable to torque winch mounting bolts before bumper is on the truck
