Rear Locker for the 5th Gen 4Runner — ARB, Eaton, and TRD

Difficulty 4/53–6 hrs$649–9992010-2024

The 5th gen 4Runner uses a Toyota 8.9" ring gear rear differential — the ARB Air Locker and Eaton ELocker are the two quality aftermarket options, and the TRD mechanical locker is the factory bolt-on solution available on Trail and TRD Pro trims.

The 4Runner Trail Edition and TRD Pro models come from the factory with a TRD mechanical locker in the rear differential — it's a mechanical cam-and-pawl design that engages both rear wheels when actuated via a dash switch. If your 4Runner is a Trail or TRD Pro trim, you already have a rear locker. SR5 and Limited 4Runners do not have a factory locker and require aftermarket installation.

The ARB Air Locker for the Toyota 8.9" rear axle is the highest-performance aftermarket option. When disengaged, it behaves exactly like a factory open differential — no on-road driving compromises. When engaged via air pressure, both rear wheels lock together for full traction in low-grip situations. The ARB locker requires an air compressor (dedicated ARB compressor, $400–$700, or a dual-use on-board air system) and air line routing to the differential. The total system cost including the compressor is $1,250–$1,550.

The Eaton ELocker eliminates the air requirement. It uses an electromagnetic coil to lock the carrier — flip the in-cab switch and both rear wheels lock. The engagement is clean and on-road behavior when disengaged is identical to an open differential. For builds where on-board air is not already planned (no air bumper, no air lockers front and rear), the Eaton ELocker is the most cost-effective and installation-friendly option.

The 4Runner 8.9" rear differential uses a standard gear setup that most shops familiar with Toyota axles can service. Backlash spec is 0.005"–0.008" and carrier bearing preload follows Toyota's standard procedure. This is the same differential used in Tundra and Land Cruiser 200 Series applications, so parts availability and shop familiarity are good.
