The JT Gladiator's 3.6L Pentastar V6 calls for OAT (Organic Acid Technology) coolant, and using the wrong type — or letting it go past service life — is how you get corrosion deposits building up inside an aluminum cylinder head.
Jeep specs the Gladiator's 3.6L for HOAT or OAT coolant, specifically a silicate-free formula compatible with the aluminum coolant passages throughout the Pentastar engine. Mopar's factory fill is a 5-year/150,000-mile OAT formulation. The factory interval holds up under normal use — if the Gladiator sees regular off-road water crossings, dusty desert runs, or extended periods of high coolant temp, inspect it at 60,000 miles rather than waiting for the 5-year mark.
The telltale sign that coolant needs replacement: it should be bright orange-yellow (Mopar OAT) or green (some aftermarket fills). Dark brown or rust-tinted coolant is carrying iron oxide and aluminum corrosion — the system needs a flush, not a drain-and-fill.
Do not mix coolant types. Mixing OAT with IAT (green silicate coolant) produces a gel that clogs radiator passages. If you're unsure what's already in the system, flush the entire system before filling with fresh coolant.
The label confusion around Pentastar coolant causes more wrong fills than any other part of this job. Here's the plain version. The factory fill is Mopar's orange-yellow OAT (Organic Acid Technology) coolant, marketed as the 10-year/150,000-mile formula on newer bottles (5-year on the earliest JT bottles — both are the same OAT chemistry). What matters is that it's silicate-free and phosphate-free, because both silicates and phosphates attack the aluminum and the water-pump seal over time.
Acceptable substitutes are coolants specifically labeled compatible with Chrysler MS-90032 or the OAT/HOAT spec: Zerex G-05 and Prestone's yellow OAT formulation are the two most commonly confirmed. Where owners go wrong is grabbing a green "universal" IAT coolant or a generic "works with all makes" jug that's actually a hybrid — mixing chemistries drops the corrosion package out of suspension and forms the gel that clogs the radiator and heater core. If you can't confirm what a bottle is, don't use it. And always cut concentrate 50/50 with distilled water, never tap; the minerals in tap water are exactly what the aluminum passages don't tolerate.
If the truck spends real time in Phoenix-grade summer heat or tows near the 7,650-lb rating, the coolant's condition matters more than the calendar. Pair a coolant inspection with your regular service-interval checks, and if the engine has a history of running warm, rule out the Pentastar oil-cooler/coolant crossover leak before assuming the flush fixed everything.
A JT that overheats after a flush is almost always trapping air, not short on coolant. The Pentastar's coolant passages sit high relative to the fill point, and air trapped at the thermostat or in the heater core reads as a phantom overheat or a heater that blows cold.
Bleed it deliberately: with the reservoir cap off and the front of the truck slightly nose-up (park on a gentle incline or ramps), idle the engine with the heater set to full hot and the fan on low. As the thermostat opens you'll see the level drop and bubbles rise — top off as it settles. Squeeze the upper radiator hose firmly several times to push trapped air toward the reservoir. Bring it fully to temp, let it cool completely, then recheck the cold level at the MAX line and repeat the warm-up once. Two heat-cool cycles clears nearly every air pocket. If the heater still blows lukewarm after that, there's a stubborn pocket in the heater core — the incline-and-idle cycle usually clears it on the third try.
Mopar OAT antifreeze (1 gallon): ~$20–24. Spec-correct and the cleanest choice — no compatibility guesswork.
Zerex G-05 antifreeze (1 gallon): ~$18–22. OAT-compatible, widely available at auto parts stores, confirmed safe for Pentastar aluminum. This is a common substitute.
