Spark Plug Replacement — Jeep Gladiator JT 3.6L Pentastar

The Gladiator's 3.6L Pentastar has six cylinders arranged in a V configuration — three on each bank. Stellantis recommends spark plug replacement at 60,000 miles. In practice, iridium plugs often go longer; copper plugs need replacement closer to 30,000 miles if the JT does significant idling or towing.

The 3.6L Pentastar is a well-proven engine but the V6 layout means the rear bank (cylinders 4, 5, 6) is significantly harder to access than the front bank. Budget extra time for the rear plugs — they require working over the top of the engine near the firewall, and a ratchet with a universal joint or swivel extension makes the job manageable without skinning knuckles. A spark plug socket with a rubber insert (to grip the plug during extraction) is mandatory — dropping a plug down into the cylinder head on the rear bank is a very bad day.

Factory plug specification: The JT 3.6L uses a 14mm thread, 5/8" socket plug gapped at 0.042". Confirm with your NGK or Denso application guide before purchasing — plug length matters and an incorrect plug depth can cause pre-ignition damage.

The plug metal sets both the replacement interval and how consistently the 3.6L fires, so it's worth understanding rather than grabbing whatever the parts counter hands you. Copper plugs conduct best and light off cleanly, but the electrode is soft and erodes fast — figure 20,000–30,000 miles in the Pentastar, which makes them false economy given the rear-bank labor. Platinum plugs use a hard platinum pad on the center electrode and roughly double that life. Iridium goes further still: a fine iridium tip resists erosion at the highest temperatures and holds its gap toward and past the factory 60,000-mile interval while firing more consistently at idle and under load.

For the Gladiator's naturally aspirated 3.6L, iridium (NGK Iridium IX or Denso Iridium TT) is the right default — the small premium over copper pays back in a longer interval and one fewer trip into that awkward rear bank. One warning that overrides brand preference: run the factory heat range and gap (0.042"). Chasing a colder plug because you added a tune or bigger tires without a real forced-induction reason invites fouling and hard starts. Confirm the exact application against the maintenance schedule in /db/gladiator/jt-service-intervals/ before buying.

The 60,000-mile figure is a ceiling for gentle highway miles. A JT that idles for winching and compressor work, tows regularly, or spends time in dust and heat loads the plugs harder and shortens the real interval — pull and inspect at 40,000–45,000 if that's your duty cycle rather than trusting the sticker.

The plugs and the ignition coils fail as a system, and a spark-plug job is the natural moment to think about both. Each cylinder has its own coil-on-plug unit; when one weakens it throws a cylinder-specific misfire code (P0301 through P0306, where the last digit is the cylinder number) and often a P0300 random-misfire alongside. If you're already pulling coils to reach the plugs on a high-mileage JT and one boot is cracked or the truck has logged a misfire on that cylinder, replacing that coil now is cheap insurance against a repeat teardown of the rear bank.

Reading the old plugs as they come out is free diagnostic data — do it before you toss them. A tan-to-light-gray insulator is a healthy, correctly running cylinder. Dry black soot points to a rich condition or heavy idling; wet, oily black points to oil intrusion and is a reason to investigate before buttoning up, since a worsening oil-consumption problem shows here first. A white or blistered insulator suggests running too hot or too lean. If one plug looks dramatically different from its five siblings, that cylinder is telling you something — chase it before it becomes a misfire on the trail. Champion Platinum set of 6: ~$35. Adequate for normal use, shorter service life than iridium.

NGK Iridium IX set of 6: ~$48. The right choice for most JT owners — iridium lasts longer, fires more consistently, and the price premium over copper pays back in extended interval.

Denso Iridium TT set of 6: ~$58. Slightly better electrode design than standard iridium — minimal real-world difference from NGK Iridium on a naturally aspirated street/trail JT.

Mopar OEM set of 6: ~$65. Factory-spec iridium, carries a Mopar warranty. No performance benefit over NGK or Denso iridium — the premium is the brand.

Shop labor for spark plug replacement on a V6 (accessible bank + rear bank): ~$200–300. The rear bank access is what shops charge for — it's legitimate labor time. If you're comfortable with the task, the DIY save is real.

Steps

  1. Allow the engine to cool completely before starting. Hot aluminum threads strip more easily than cold ones, and pulling plugs from a warm engine risks galling the threads.
  2. Remove the engine cover (held by friction or plastic push pins depending on trim/year). Set aside.
  3. Front bank (cylinders 1, 2, 3): Access is from the top front of the engine bay. Use a spark plug socket on a 6" extension to reach straight down into each cylinder well. Blow compressed air into the well before removing the plug — debris falls into the combustion chamber if you skip this step.
  4. Disconnect the ignition coil connector, then remove the coil bolt (8mm). Lift the coil straight up out of the well. Label each coil if you plan to reinstall the same ones (some builders replace coils at this service interval — $35–50 each for aftermarket, $60–75 OEM).
  5. Remove the old plug. Inspect the gap and the electrode condition:
  6. Normal wear: rounded center electrode, slight gap growth
  7. Oil fouling (black, oily): oil consumption issue — investigate before reinstalling
  8. Carbon fouling (dry, black soot): rich mixture or excessive idling
  9. Excessive gap (over 0.055"): plug past service life — replace now
  10. Gap new plugs to 0.042" before installing. Even pre-gapped plugs can shift during shipping.
  11. Apply a thin coat of anti-seize to the threads (first two threads only — not the full thread length). Do not get anti-seize on the electrode or ground strap.
  12. Thread each plug in by hand until seated, then torque to 13 ft-lbs. Do not exceed — over-torquing strips the aluminum head threads, which is a $500+ repair.
  13. Apply dielectric grease to the inside of each ignition coil boot before reinstalling. It prevents the boot from bonding to the ceramic plug insulator and makes future coil removal possible without tearing the boot.
  14. Rear bank (cylinders 4, 5, 6): Same procedure, but access requires leaning over the engine from the passenger side, or working from below on a lifted vehicle. A 3/8" ratchet with a universal joint and 6" extension is the right combination. Take your time — rushing the rear bank is where mistakes happen.
  15. Reconnect all coil connectors. Reinstall the engine cover.
  16. Start the engine. It may run rough for the first 30 seconds as the new plugs and fresh gaps adjust. A smooth idle should follow quickly.
