Side Steps and Rock Rails for the Power Wagon

Bolt-on steps are the right answer for most Power Wagons, and the truck's 14.2 inches of factory ground clearance is why. The Power Wagon leaves the factory with roughly 14.2 inches of ground clearance on a 149.3-inch wheelbase — more clearance than most lifted Wranglers, on a body that is also considerably wider. That geometry puts the rocker panels further from rock contact than on a lower, narrower rig. It does not make the rockers immune. Side slopes, tight canyon trails, and a loaded truck with the suspension compressed all still bring sheet metal toward rock. But the risk profile is different, and the aftermarket reflects it: nearly everything sold for this truck is a step tube with some degree of protection built in, not a full-coverage rock slider.

There is a second reason bolt-on steps sell so well here. This truck is tall. Getting a passenger into a crew cab that sits at 14 inches of clearance on 33s is a real reach, and it gets worse the moment you add a leveling kit and 35s. Most Power Wagon owners buy the step for daily access and treat the protection as a bonus. That is an honest reason to buy, and it changes which product is correct.

The marketing terms blur together, so sort them by what carries the load:

The AMP Research BedStep2 ($329) is worth naming because it shows up on so many Power Wagon overland builds, but it solves bed access at the rear bumper, not rocker protection. Buy it as a supplement, not as your side armor.

If the truck sees fire roads, snow, and a lot of family entry and exit, a drop step or nerf bar is correct and the extra $200 for a rock rail buys you nothing. If you run off-camber shelf trails or rock gardens where the rocker can find granite, MORryde's rail is the floor of what is worth installing. If you routinely put the truck somewhere that a rocker gets loaded hard enough to matter, stop shopping bolt-on parts and go weld-on — bracket-mounted rails fail at the bracket, and a bracket failure on a 7,000-pound truck bends the rocker anyway, so you paid twice.

The weight argument cuts against over-buying, too. A Power Wagon's payload is rated at roughly 1,400-1,630 pounds depending on year and configuration, and every armor decision spends some of it. Every failure mode on bolt-on side protection traces back to the mount, not the tube. Three things to check before you buy:

Frame versus body. Ask where the bracket lands. A bracket bolted to the rocker pinch weld transfers rock loads into unibody-thin sheet metal. A bracket bolted to the frame rail transfers them into the ladder frame, which is what you want. Vendors are not always clear about this in the listing — look at the install instructions before ordering.

Bracket count and spacing. Three brackets across a crew-cab rocker is the minimum worth having. Two brackets on a long crew-cab step means the middle of the tube is a lever, and lateral contact bends it into the door sill.

Hardware grade and corrosion. Kits ship with grade 8 hardware or they do not. Powder coat over unprepped steel on a truck that sees brine will bubble at the weld seams within two winters — the tube survives, the finish does not. Touch up any drilled hole with cold galvanizing compound at install time rather than after the rust starts.

Install is a one-to-two-hour job with hand tools if the frame holes are clean; budget a shop hour or two ($100-$220) if you would rather not lie under the truck. Kits that require drilling take longer and take the install out of reversible territory, which matters on a leased or resale-sensitive truck.

Steps

  1. Clean the frame rail and rocker mounting area — remove undercoating buildup from the bracket contact points so the bracket seats on metal, not on a compressible layer.
  2. For slip-on tube style steps: locate the factory frame mounting points (pre-drilled on most Ram 2500 frames), position the brackets, and hand-thread all hardware before torquing anything.
  3. For MORryde rock rail steps: position the rail along the frame, verify the step surface is level and every mounting tab is fully seated against the frame, then torque to the manufacturer's spec.
  4. Verify the step does not contact the body anywhere in suspension travel. Compress the suspension by hand or with a jack under the axle and check clearance at full bump.
  5. Apply anti-seize to the mounting bolts, especially in salt states where frame corrosion will make removal miserable in five years.
  6. Re-torque every fastener after the first 100-200 miles. Bracket-to-frame joints settle, and a loose bracket is what turns into a sheared bracket.
