Raptor Brake Pad and Rotor Replacement — The Full Procedure on a 6,000-Pound Truck

Pads and rotors on a Raptor are a half-day driveway job with no exotic tools — but this truck weighs 6,000 pounds before you add 37s, so two things are non-negotiable: rated jack stands on solid ground, and a real torque wrench on the caliper bracket bolts. Plan on front pads every 30,000–40,000 miles on big tires, and replace rotors in pairs.

This is safety-critical work. There are no affiliate links in this guide, and there's no shame in handing it to a shop. If you take it on, take it slowly and torque everything to spec.

Big tires shorten brake life — more rotating mass, more leverage against the rotor, more heat per stop. A Raptor on 37s can need front pads 30–40% sooner than the same truck on stock rubber, and the brake fade guide covers why heat management on this truck deserves more attention than the maintenance schedule implies.

Pads (front or rear set), rotors if you're replacing them — measure or look for scoring and heat checking — plus a C-clamp or piston spreader, a breaker bar for the caliper bracket bolts, brake cleaner, silicone caliper grease for the slide pins, and a torque wrench that reads accurately at high values. The bracket bolts are torqued well north of 100 lb-ft and they may have thread locker from the factory; a stubby ratchet will not move them.

One decision before you order: pad compound. OEM Motorcraft pads are quiet, low-dust, and entirely adequate for stock use. PowerStop Z36 or Hawk LTS bite harder hot and resist fade when towing or running desert grades, at the cost of more dust and a touch more cold-stop noise. If the brake pedal has ever gone long on a downhill grade, pick the heavy-use compound.

  1. Crack the lug nuts on the ground, then jack the truck and set it on stands under the frame. Pull the wheel. A Raptor wheel with a 35 on it weighs over 100 pounds — keep your feet clear and lift with your legs.
  2. Remove the caliper. Two slide pin bolts hold the caliper to the bracket. Support the caliper on a hook or wire — never let it hang by the brake hose.
  3. If replacing rotors, remove the bracket. Two large bolts on the back of the knuckle. Breaker bar, steady pressure. The rotor may be rust-bonded to the hub; a dead-blow hammer on the hat face (not the friction surface you're keeping — but you're not keeping it) breaks it free.
  4. Clean the hub face to bare metal with a wire brush. Rust scale between hub and rotor causes runout, and runout becomes pedal pulsation in 5,000 miles. This step is the difference between a job that lasts and a comeback.
  5. New rotor on, bracket back on, torqued to spec. Look up the spec for your generation in the workshop manual — bracket bolts on these trucks are typically in the 130–180 lb-ft range and some call for new bolts or fresh thread locker. Do not guess at this number.
  6. Compress the caliper piston slowly with the old pad as a press plate. Crack the bleeder while compressing if the fluid is old — pushing years of sediment backward through the ABS unit is how cheap pad jobs create expensive ABS problems. Watch the reservoir level.
  7. Grease the slide pins with silicone brake grease, seat the new pads with their clips, hang the caliper, torque the slide bolts.
  8. Pump the pedal before you move the truck. The first pedal stroke after a pad job is air-gap takeup — the truck will not stop on it. Pump until firm, check fluid level, then wheel on, lug nuts torqued to 150 lb-ft in a star pattern, and re-torqued after 50 miles.

New pads on new rotors need a transfer layer: six to eight firm stops from 40 mph to about 10 mph, without coming to a complete halt, then a few miles of gentle driving to cool. Skip this and the pads glaze, and glazed pads on a 6,000-pound truck feel exactly like the worn pads you replaced.

Inspect the rubber slide pin boots — torn boots let dust seize the pins, which causes the single-edge pad wear that brought many of these trucks in to begin with. Check the brake hoses for cracking while you're in there, and if the fluid is dark, flush it; the brake fade guide covers fluid choice. Desert trucks should also get the dust shields checked for bends that contact the rotor — the tick-tick-tick at low speed everyone blames on rocks.

Front pads $90–$120, front rotor pair $250–$320 for Motorcraft or quality aftermarket (Bosch, PowerStop drilled/slotted kits bundle pads and rotors near $400). Rear axle runs slightly less. A shop charges $400–$650 per axle for the same parts — the driveway saves real money here, but only price it that way if you'll do every step, including the torque wrench and the bedding procedure.
