If you're carrying a rooftop tent, drawer system, fridge, water, and fuel, the stock Tacoma rear leaf pack will sag and ride harshly within the first year — Deaver, OME Dakar, and Icon RXT each fix this differently, and the right choice depends on how much weight you actually carry.
The stock Tacoma rear leaf pack is tuned for an empty bed. Add 300+ lbs of overland gear and the truck sags, the ride goes from firm to harsh-and-bouncy (because the spring rate is wrong for the new loaded weight), and the rear axle wraps under throttle. Adding a leaf to the stock pack with an "AAL" (Add-A-Leaf) helps slightly, but it's a band-aid. A complete replacement pack is the durable fix.
**Deaver** builds custom packs by load. The Stage I (U402) is the most popular Tacoma leaf — 9 leaves, 2" lift, rated for 0-300 lb constant bed load. Stage II handles 300-600 lb (camper shell, drawers, fuel cans). Stage III handles 600+ lb (slide-in campers). Deaver ride quality is the benchmark: smoother than stock when loaded, stays planted unloaded. About $680-$750 per pair.
**Old Man Emu Dakar** is the value option at roughly $580 for the EL097R (medium) or $620 for the EL112R (heavy) per pair. About 2.25" of lift. Stiffer than Deaver but built for global expedition duty — the parts are everywhere and you can order them anywhere. Best fit for moderate loads with occasional heavy days.
**Icon RXT Multi-Rate** uses a progressive-rate pack with tip inserts and leaf separators to reduce friction. Around $920-$1,000 per pair. Best ride quality of the three when unloaded, holds well loaded. The premium choice if budget allows.
What to avoid: cheap Add-A-Leaf kits ($120-$180). They wedge an extra leaf into the stock pack, which alters the arc and stresses the main leaf. Lift comes from preload, not from a redesigned pack. Most owners regret AALs within a year.
All three require new U-bolts (always — never reuse). Plan to do shackles and bushings at the same time, especially on a 2nd gen with 100k+ miles. Pinion angle will change with the new lift; check with a digital level and add a degreed shim if vibration shows up over 50 mph.
