8.25 Axle Shaft Upgrades (27 vs 29-Spline)

Difficulty 3/54–8 hrs$340–8001997-2001

Chromoly axle shafts for the 8.25 in 27-spline or 29-spline configurations. 29-spline upgrade increases shaft cross-section significantly.

Stock 8.25 shafts in 27-spline are adequate to 33s for moderate use. 29-spline shafts are roughly 20% stronger and become important for hard wheeling on 33s+ or any 35" tire use.

Options:

29-spline conversion: requires upgrading the entire carrier to 29-spline as well, which means either a 29-spline locker (Detroit Truetrac 29-spline, or ARB RD117) or a new carrier with stock open differential gears. The 29-spline carrier + shafts package is ~$800 total.

For most 8.25 builds running 33s, stock 27-spline shafts are fine. The 29-spline conversion is for builders going harder.

Install: same as D30/D35 axle R&R. Drum brake disassembly required.
