Tailgate / Liftgate Body Mount Rust ('Uniframe' Fix)

Difficulty 4/58–20 hrs$80–5001984-1990, 1991-1995, 1996, 1997-2001

The XJ liftgate (rear hatch) hinges into a flat panel that rusts behind the headliner trim. Severe rust can cause the hinge to tear out. Patch with 14-gauge steel or full hinge-area panel replacement.

The XJ rear hatch hinges to a horizontal section at the very top of the rear opening. Behind the headliner trim, this panel is exposed to condensation and water from the rear hatch glass seal. Rust starts hidden and isn't visible until the headliner trim is removed.

Worst case: hinges tear free of the body, the hatch sags or falls off. Common on 1984-1996 XJ in salt-belt states.

Inspection: pull the rear interior trim (rear dome light area), look at the metal panel above the rear glass. Tap with a screwdriver — flaky = rust.

Repair:

1) Support the hatch (jack or stand) and remove from hinges.

2) Remove rear interior headliner trim and any cargo trim that overlaps the area.

3) Drill out spot welds connecting the hinge reinforcement to the body.

4) Cut out rotten metal, going beyond visible damage. Treat surrounding metal.

5) Fabricate or buy a hinge reinforcement panel from 14-gauge steel (this area is structural — don't use thinner). KEY Parts offers an XJ hatch hinge panel.

6) Weld in, prime, paint. Apply seam sealer to all seams to prevent water re-entry.

7) Reinstall hatch — adjust hinges so hatch closes flush.

Prevention: replace the rear hatch glass weatherstrip if cracked, treat seams with seam sealer if you ever take off the rear interior trim.
