Aux Gauge Cluster - Voltmeter / Oil Pressure / Trans Temp
Add real voltmeter, oil pressure, and trans temp gauges. Factory XJ gauges are notoriously unreliable (oil pressure is a binary switch dressed up as a gauge on Renix; later cluster reads from sender but is dampened).
What the XJ factory cluster lies about:
- Oil pressure: 1987-1990 Renix uses a switch + simulated gauge. 1991-2001 has a real sender but the gauge is heavily dampened — large pressure changes appear as small needle moves. Add a real Auto Meter or VDO mechanical oil pressure gauge teed off the back of the block (1/8" NPT port near oil filter).
- Voltage: factory voltmeter on 91+ is OK but dampened. A real voltmeter shows alternator ripple/drops you'd otherwise miss.
- Trans temp: there is NO factory trans temp gauge on AW4/AX15. Trans temp is the #1 thing that kills automatics under heavy load — mandatory gauge for SOA builds, towing, or hard wheeling.
Good gauges: Auto Meter Phantom series (~$60 each), VDO Vision Black (~$70), or modern digital like Auto Meter Spek-Pro. Trans temp gauge needs a 1/8" NPT sender — install in the AW4 test port (passenger side rear of the case) or inline on the return cooler line. Oil pressure sender goes in the engine block's existing port (remove the factory sender and tee).
Mount in A-pillar pod (see entry), under-dash cluster, or a single overhead cluster. Don't pile too many — 3 is the sweet spot (volts, oil, trans temp).
