OEM Fog Light Retrofit (1997-2001 Country / Sport)

Difficulty 2/52–5 hrs$60–2501997-2001

Retrofit 1997-2001 OEM fog lights into a non-fog XJ using factory lamps, brackets, harness, and switch. Cheap from a yard, factory-clean look.

1997-2001 Country, Limited, and some Sport trims came with rectangular fog lights mounted below the bumper. Retrofitting them to a base XJ takes: a pair of fog lamps (~$30 used), the factory brackets that mount to the lower bumper, the foglamp wiring sub-harness (Mopar 56009451AC or splice in), and a foglamp switch (Mopar 56009450 for the dash).

The factory dash switch panel has a blank where the fog switch goes. The wiring tee's into the headlight circuit so fogs only come on with low beams (NHTSA rule). Pull a fuse and add 15A in the fuse box position labeled FOG.

XJ-specific tip: the lower bumper has factory holes for the fog brackets — they're usually plugged. If you have a winch bumper, you'll either lose factory fog mounts or need adapter brackets. Many builders skip the factory fogs and put SAE J581 fogs or amber LED pods (Baja Designs Squadron Sport, Rigid D-Series) in the bumper instead.

For pre-1997 XJ, factory fog conversion is harder — the dash and harness don't have provisions. Use aftermarket SAE-rated fogs on a relay.
