1997-2001 XJ uses 9004 (early) and 9007 (later) composite headlights. Direct LED bulb retrofit (Diode Dynamics SL1, GTR Lighting Ultra 2) or full housing swap with J.W. Speaker Model 95.
The 97-01 XJ composite headlight is a reflector housing with 9004 dual-filament bulb (early) or 9007 dual-filament bulb (later). LED 'bulb' retrofits drop in but are picky about reflector geometry — a poorly designed LED in a reflector housing creates glare without throw. Stick with reputable brands:
For a real upgrade, swap the entire housing to J.W. Speaker Model 95 LED Headlights (~$700/pair). These are projector-based LED, DOT/SAE certified, and produce a sharp cutoff. They use a 9004/9007 connector so plug-and-play. They also fit pre-97 with adapter rings.
Wiring note: LEDs draw less current but some flicker due to PWM (pulse width modulation) on the factory DRL circuit — install an anti-flicker harness if you see issues.
