LED Headlight Upgrade — 5x7 Sealed-Beam Replacement and Full LED Housings
Every Cherokee XJ, 1984 through the final 2001 models, ran the same 5x7-inch H6054 sealed-beam headlight — there was never a composite housing or a replaceable 9004/9007 bulb under the bezel at any point in the run, on any trim. That single spec is why the aftermarket LED options are so interchangeable: every one of them bolts into the same three-screw retaining ring the factory sealed beam used.
Stock halogen sealed beams put out a fraction of what a modern LED delivers, and on a highway-speed platform like the XJ that gap matters more than most owners realize — deer, washouts, and unlit county roads don't wait for your eyes to adjust. The upgrade path splits into two tiers: a direct LED sealed-beam replacement that drops into the stock socket with zero wiring changes, or a full LED housing kit that replaces the entire unit with sealed, DOT-certified optics.
Budget drop-in LED sealed beams (LOYO, Quake LED Tempest, similar 5x7 H6054-spec units) run $70-230/pair and plug straight into the factory socket with no other changes. They're a real upgrade over 40-year-old halogen sealed-beam tech, but the beam pattern quality varies by manufacturer — stick to DOT/SAE-approved units with real reviews, not unbranded listings with stock photos.
The J.W. Speaker 8900 Evolution 2 (~$630-650/pair) is the ceiling: purpose-built LED optics in a sealed IP69K housing, hard-coated anti-fog lens, and a documented beam pattern that meets FMVSS-108. It costs roughly 5x what a budget drop-in costs, but the difference in low-beam cutoff and high-beam throw is not subtle — this is the option trail-driving XJs actually run at night.
Steps
- Open the hood and locate the chrome or black trim ring around each headlight — it's held by 2-3 Phillips screws (do not touch the outer adjustment screws at the top and side of the bucket; those set aim, not retention).
- Remove the trim ring screws and set the ring aside. Pull the sealed beam forward out of the mounting bucket.
- Unplug the factory connector from the back of the sealed beam. Note the connector orientation — the replacement LED unit's plug is keyed the same way.
- Plug the new LED headlight into the factory connector. No relay or harness splice is needed for either the LOYO/Quake-style drop-in or the J.W. Speaker housing — both run on the stock circuit.
- Seat the new unit in the bucket, reinstall the trim ring, and torque the retaining screws snug — these are small sheet-metal screws, not a torque-spec fastener; snug by hand is correct.
- Aim both headlights before driving at night. Park 25 feet from a flat wall, mark the stock beam's high-intensity zone in daylight, then adjust the vertical and horizontal screws so the new LED beam matches that reference. LED beam patterns cut off differently than halogen — skipping this step is the single biggest cause of "my new lights blind everyone."
