Brake System Torque Specs

Caliper guide pins 25-30 ft-lb. Caliper bracket to knuckle 90 ft-lb. Brake hose banjo 23 ft-lb. Master cylinder to booster 21 ft-lb.

Front brake torque values for XJ disc system. Caliper slide/guide pin bolts: 30 ft-lb (40 Nm); these are also commonly listed as 24-27 ft-lb in some FSMs - the higher value is safer and matches modern brake specs. Caliper bracket-to-knuckle bolts: 90 ft-lb (122 Nm) - these are large 13/16 hex head bolts. Brake hose banjo bolt at caliper: 23 ft-lb (31 Nm) with NEW crush washers each time. Brake line flare nuts: 12-15 ft-lb (do not overtorque - flares deform and leak). Master cylinder to booster nuts: 21 ft-lb (28 Nm). Booster to firewall nuts: 21 ft-lb. Rear drum brake backing plate bolts: 65 ft-lb. Rear wheel cylinder bolts: 80 in-lb (7 ft-lb). Proportioning valve mounting: 17 ft-lb. ABS HCU mounting bolts: 60 in-lb (5 ft-lb) - do not overtighten. Bleed screws: 80-115 in-lb (~10 ft-lb) - these snap if you exceed 15 ft-lb.
