Pre-1997 dome light has three positions: off, on, door. Middle 'on' click mode shorts to ground through the switch. Common point of intermittent dome light not working with door open.
On 1984-1996 XJ the dome light has an integrated switch in the lens with three detents: full left = off, middle = on, full right = door (activated by door switches). If the middle 'on' position stops working, or if the dome light no longer comes on with the door, the issue is almost always the door jamb switches rusting (driver door is worst, since it gets the most rain through the door seal). Spray the door jamb switches with electrical contact cleaner and cycle them 20 times. If still failing, replace the door switch (Mopar 56010143). For the 1997+ XJ a single computer-controlled body module (BCM) handles dome timing including the 'fade out' after closing the door; on these, the issue is usually a door switch failure or BCM software glitch (disconnect battery 10 min to reset). The dome light lens itself is a common drop-and-break item; replacement lens is Mopar 55234969.
