OE tank skid is sheet metal and rusts. Skid removal is two bolts and four straps. Aftermarket steel or HDPE skid recommended for trail rigs.
The OE XJ fuel tank skid is a stamped sheet metal pan that wraps under the plastic fuel tank. It rusts severely in salt-belt rigs and bends easily on rocks. Replacement options. Stock replacement: Crown 52000813 ($65) - same sheet metal, will rust again. Aftermarket steel: Skid Row Off Road, JCR, M.O.R.E., and others sell heavy-gauge welded skids ($120-250) that protect against impact. UHMW polyethylene: Boatside (Black Magic Brakes), GenRight HDPE - lighter and slick on rocks but not impact-rated. Tank drop process: relieve fuel pressure (pump relay out, crank), disconnect fuel filler hose at the tank inlet, disconnect EVAP lines and pump electrical at top of tank, support tank with jack, remove four 13mm strap bolts (often rusted - PB Blaster, heat, or cut and replace). The straps and bolts are commonly seized; budget time accordingly. Replace strap bolts with grade-8 hardware. Inspect tank vent lines and EVAP rollover valve at top of tank while access is available.
