Auto-ranging digital multimeter with 10 MOhm input impedance is essential. Test functions: DC volts, DC milliamps, ohms, continuity, frequency.

A quality digital multimeter is the single most useful diagnostic tool for the XJ. Look for: 10 MOhm input impedance (essential - lower impedance meters load down sensor signals and give false readings), auto-ranging (saves time), back-probing leads (for testing connectors without piercing wires), and a min/max function (for catching intermittent dropouts). Fluke 115 ($170) is the durable pro choice; Klein MM6000 ($90) is a solid mid-tier; AstroAI WH5000A ($30) is a serviceable budget option. Key XJ uses: parasitic battery draw test (DC milliamps in series), sensor voltage testing (DC volts at MAP, TPS, CTS), continuity testing across switches and grounds, resistance testing of CPS and CMP sensors (CPS should read about 125-275 ohm across the two signal pins; open or short means dead). Always disconnect battery before resistance testing or you blow the meter fuse.
