A quality digital multimeter is the single most useful diagnostic tool for the XJ. Look for: 10 MOhm input impedance (essential - lower impedance meters load down sensor signals and give false readings), auto-ranging (saves time), back-probing leads (for testing connectors without piercing wires), and a min/max function (for catching intermittent dropouts).
