Dim or dead dashboard? T5 or T10 incandescent bulbs behind cluster and radio. LED replacement is bright but watch polarity.

Instrument cluster illumination uses small incandescent bulbs that burn out after 10-15 years. Common symptoms: half the cluster goes dark, the radio illumination dies, the HVAC controls are unreadable at night. Bulbs are accessible by pulling the cluster bezel (four screws + clips) and the cluster (four screws). Bulbs are twist-and-pull T5 (cluster) or T10 wedge (radio/HVAC). LED replacement bulbs from SuperBrightLEDs or similar are popular but need to be installed with the correct polarity (try one direction; if dark, flip 180 degrees). Mix-and-match LEDs in the cluster - all white for a cleaner look, or color-tinted to match the OE green tint. While the cluster is out, inspect the speedometer cable on early XJs and the gauge needles for staining. The pre-1997 cluster uses different bulb fitments than the 1997+ updated cluster (which uses surface-mount style backlighting in some submodels).
