An accessible 2.5 lb minimum extinguisher is non-negotiable for an off-road XJ — fuel and exhaust heat get close.
Old fuel hose, leaky engine seals, and an overheated exhaust hitting dry grass are how XJs catch fire on the trail. A 2.5 lb ABC dry chemical extinguisher is the minimum sensible size; many builders prefer a 5 lb. Mount it inside the cab where the driver can reach it without unbuckling — common locations: roll bar (if equipped), B-pillar bracket, passenger floor bracket, behind the driver seat.
Dry chemical is the cheapest and most versatile, but the residue ruins electronics — for engine-bay-protection-heavy builds, consider a Halotron / Halguard clean-agent extinguisher. Mount it solidly: under heavy bouncing, plastic-mounted extinguishers become projectiles.
Replace or recharge every 6 years even if unused — the propellant slowly leaks.
