A Class III receiver hitch plus a receiver shackle mount is the most straightforward rated rear recovery anchor.
Most XJs already have or can fit a Class III 2" receiver hitch. Add a forged or weld-built receiver shackle mount (Factor 55 HitchLink, Smittybilt, etc.) and you have a rated rear recovery point that doubles as a tow point. Avoid using the hitch ball as a strap point — straps slip and balls have been broken off in jerk recoveries, becoming projectiles.
Aftermarket rear bumpers (JCR, Iron Rock, MetalCloak, Rusty's, M.O.R.E.) typically integrate weld-on shackle tabs and sometimes include the receiver. For a moderate-build XJ, the rear bumper with tire carrier plus integrated shackle mounts is the standard answer.
For heavy use, weld the hitch box to the frame in addition to bolting it — the bolt-through points fatigue over years of jerks.
