12k winches exist for XJs but are usually overkill and stress the unibody more than they need to.
A 12k winch is realistically only worth the extra weight and amp draw if you're winching frequently, in mud, with the truck loaded heavy. It also asks more of the bumper mount; not every steel front bumper is engineered for 12k pull. Most XJ builders top out at 10k for a reason — the nose-down weight bias from 80–100 lb of winch up front is already significant on a unibody.
If you do go 12k, pair it with a dual-battery system and an upgraded alternator (160A+) to avoid voltage sag under heavy pulls.
