Rear lift options span add-a-leaf (cheap, harsh), full replacement packs (RC/Rusty's/IRO), and custom packs (Alcan, Deaver, BDS) for serious load and articulation.
An add-a-leaf (AAL) wedges an extra leaf into the stock pack. It's the cheapest rear lift ($40-80) but stiffens the pack, kills articulation, and can cause arch reversal if oversprung. Used on most 2"-3" budget kits. Avoid for serious trail use.
Full replacement leaf packs are the right answer for any real lift. Rough Country packs are 3-leaf, harsh, cheap (~$200/pair). Rusty's packs are 4-leaf with overload, mid-quality (~$280/pair, known to sag slightly over time). IRO packs are 4-leaf, well-arched, hold their lift (~$320/pair). BDS packs use mil-spec materials and ride exceptionally well (~$450/pair).
Custom packs from Alcan (Alaska) or Deaver (CA) are made-to-order for your specific load and ride preference. You ship them your weight, lift goal, and preferred ride, and they build a custom pack. ~$600-900/pair. The gold standard for overland builds. Alcan's XJ packs are particularly well-regarded on NAXJA for overland builds carrying full camping load + rear bumper + swing-out tire.
Key specs: stock XJ leaf packs have ~5 leaves. A 4.5" lift pack typically has 4-5 leaves with stiffer rates. Overload leaves add capacity but only engage at high load (don't help articulation but help with sag under bumpers/load). U-bolts must be re-torqued after first 100 miles to prevent loosening.
