Transgo or Sonnax shift kit firms shifts and improves clutch life. Real upgrade for built-engine XJs.
The OEM AW4 shifts are deliberately soft — comfort tuning for the SUV market. The hydraulic apply pressures are low at part throttle, which means slipping clutches during shift events. Over 100k miles this glazes friction surfaces and reduces capacity.
A shift kit modifies the valve body to raise line pressure and shorten shift duration. The two notable kits:
Transgo SK AW4 ($110-150): drop-in valve and spring changes. Firms 1-2, 2-3, 3-4 shifts. Slightly harsher feel but big clutch life improvement. Standard recommendation for stroker AW4 builds.
Sonnax / TCS rebuild parts: more expensive, individual valve replacements for known wear points. Used in full rebuilds.
Install is 2-4 hours: drop the pan, remove the valve body (12-16 bolts), follow Transgo instructions for valve/spring swaps, reinstall with new pan gasket and fluid.
For a stock 4.0L the kit is overkill — you trade comfort for durability you don't need. For any stroker or any XJ towing/wheeling regularly, it's a real upgrade.
