Stock fits 29s, 2" boost fits 30s, 3" lift fits 31s, 4.5" lift clears 32-33s with trimming, SOA clears 35s.
Rough XJ tire-fit chart that holds across most owners:
Stock suspension: 225/75R15 (~28.3") fits factory. 30x9.50R15 fits with minor rub at full stuff.
2" budget boost / lift: 30"–31" comfortable. 31x10.50R15 is the classic budget fit.
3" lift (short arm): 31"–32". 32x11.50R15 clears with a small bumpstop tweak.
4.5" lift (short arm): 32"–33". 33x12.50R15 needs front fender trim or steel high-clearance flares, and bumpstop extensions.
5.5"+ long arm or SOA: 33"–35". 35s require fender cut/flare swap and one-ton steering on the front.
SOA + extended bumpstops: 35" reliable, 37" possible but enters axle-swap territory.
Backspacing is as important as size — 3.75" backspace is the standard rule of thumb for XJs; 4.5" backspacing on stock-width axles pushes tires into the fender at full stuff.
