Gen 2 (2017โ2020) is the used market sweet spot. It offers the biggest performance jump from Gen 1, the EcoBoost is proven at this mileage, and the Live Valve shocks are well understood. Inspect cold-start cam phaser behavior carefully. The Raptor R is the best truck on this list, full stop โ if you can afford $90,000+. Gen 1 SVT is a valid buy for anyone who wants a naturally-aspirated engine and doesn't mind the fuel bill. Gen 3 base is hard to justify unless it has the 37 Package.

6.2L Naturally-Aspirated V8
411 hp, 434 lb-ft. Ford SVT built this one. Simpler mechanically โ no turbos, no intercooler, no cam phasers. Fox internal-bypass shocks without Live Valve. Expect 11โ14 MPG. Used: $28,000โ$45,000 for clean examples. The simplicity has value if you're willing to pay for fuel.
3.5L Twin-Turbo EcoBoost
450 hp, 510 lb-ft. Fox Live Valve shocks arrive here. Baja mode. Meaningfully faster than Gen 1 in every performance metric. The cam phaser issue is real on 2017โ2018 trucks โ inspect cold. Used: $42,000โ$62,000 for clean examples. This is the buy.
Updated 3.5L EcoBoost
450 hp (recalibrated), improved Fox Live Valve, optional 37 Package (37" BFG, 4.10 gears, Brembo brakes). The 37 Package is worth the premium. Base Gen 3 without it is hard to justify over a well-inspected Gen 2 at the current price delta. Used: $58,000โ$80,000.
5.2L Supercharged Predator V8
700 hp. Same engine family as the Mustang Shelby GT500, detuned for truck use. The most capable Raptor ever built. MSRP ~$109,000 new; used examples trade at $90,000โ$120,000+. The R is extraordinary โ it's simply in its own price category.
What to Inspect

Cold-start cam phaser behavior (Gen 2, 2017โ2018) Start the engine cold and listen for 45โ60 seconds. A grinding or clattering sound from the top of the engine that disappears as it warms is cam phaser rattle. Ford issued TSBs (including TSB 19-2345) covering revised phasers. Out-of-warranty repair: $2,500โ$4,500. Walk away from a rattling truck unless you're pricing in the repair.

Fox shock condition โ all generations Look for oil tracking on all four shock bodies. Gen 2/3 Live Valve shocks need rebuilds at 20,000โ30,000 hard-use miles. A full rebuild at a Fox authorized shop runs $1,200โ$2,000 for all four. A truck that has been hard-run with no shock service history needs a rebuild in your cost calculation.

37 Package verification (Gen 3) If the seller claims the 37 Package: verify via window sticker or build sheet. Confirm the Brembo calipers are present (red, Brembo casting visible) and verify the axle gear ratio via the differential fill tag or vehicle build data. Don't pay 37 Package premium for a truck without it.

Suspension fastener torque On a hard-used truck, control arm bolts, ball joint hardware, and shock mount fasteners can loosen. A shop inspection that includes a torque check on suspension fasteners is worth the cost on any Raptor with documented hard use.

- 2017โ2018 cam phaser rattle on Gen 2 The highest-risk window for the cam phaser issue. Never buy a 2017 or early 2018 truck without verifying cold-start behavior in person. A cleared code in the OBD history that the seller didn't disclose is also possible โ worth having a scanner present.
- Shock service history missing on hard-use trucks Any Raptor with documented desert or competition use that can't show shock service records needs a Fox-authorized inspection before purchase. Worn Live Valve shocks on a truck that's supposed to be stable at speed are a safety issue, not a comfort complaint.
- Lifted trucks with unknown suspension work Aftermarket lifts on a Raptor can ruin the Fox shock tune if the geometry changes weren't accounted for. Inspect lifted trucks carefully โ verify what was installed and whether the Fox recalibration was done. A Raptor with a botched lift can be genuinely unsafe at speed.
- Gen 3 priced as 37 Package without the hardware Some sellers market any Gen 3 as "37 Package spec" because it looks similar. The 4.10 gears and Brembo brakes are what make it the 37 Package. Visual inspection of the caliper and gear ratio verification are the checks.
