Eye and Hand Protection — What Each Job Requires

Eyes and hands do almost everything in a repair, and they take the majority of shop injuries because of it. The mistake isn't skipping protection entirely — it's wearing the wrong protection and trusting it. A pair of open-frame safety glasses does nothing against brake-cleaner overspray. A leather glove is the worst thing you can wear near a wire wheel. This guide covers what each job actually demands, and the few rules that turn PPE from a costume into protection.

The short answer

Eyes: Wear ANSI Z87+ safety glasses any time work can throw a particle — which is most of the time. Step up to sealed splash goggles (marked D3) for battery acid, brake cleaner, and anything you spray or pour overhead. Add a full face shield over the glasses for grinding, cutting, and wire wheels. For welding, none of that applies — you need the correct shade, which is a different tool entirely.

Hands: Match the glove to the hazard. Disposable nitrile for fluids, solvents, and used oil. Cut-resistant gloves (ANSI A-level) for sheet metal, blades, and reaching into tight sharp spaces. Leather for heat and welding. And the one rule with no exceptions: no gloves of any kind near rotating machinery — bench grinders, wire wheels, drill presses, and lathes will pull a glove, and your hand, straight in.

Why this is a safety topic, not a comfort one

Eye injuries are one of the most common — and most preventable — shop injuries. The great majority happen to people who either wore no eye protection or wore the wrong kind for the hazard. Most are caused by small particles moving fast: a chip off a hammer, a fleck of rust from under a fender, a wire flung from a spinning wheel. These don't announce themselves. They arrive faster than a blink and they don't bounce off an eye.

Hands are worse in a different way — not because hand injuries are more frequent, but because so many jobs put the hand in the exact spot where the energy is: on the sharp edge, in the pinch point, wrapped around the tool that can grab it. A cut heals. A degloving from a spinning chuck, or a solvent driven into the bloodstream through cracked skin over years, does not. The point of this guide isn't to make you wear more gear. It's to make the gear you wear actually stop the thing that's coming.

The rule that matters most

Never wear gloves — leather, nitrile, mechanics gloves, anything — while operating a bench grinder, wire wheel, drill press, lathe, or any tool with an exposed rotating spindle. If the wheel or bit catches the fabric, it winds the glove in and takes the hand with it, faster than you can let go. Bare hands can pull free. A gloved hand cannot. This is the one place where the safety gear is the hazard.

Eye protection — the four tiers

Eye protection isn't a single item. It's a small ladder, and the job tells you which rung. The governing standard for shop eyewear is ANSI Z87.1, and the markings stamped on the lens and frame tell you exactly what a given pair will and won't do.

1. Safety glasses — Z87 vs. Z87+

Basic safety glasses marked Z87 pass a drop-ball test: a one-inch steel ball dropped from about 50 inches without the lens shattering. That's fine for casual protection, but it is not rated for anything moving fast. The marking you actually want is Z87+ — the plus means the lens passed high-velocity projectile testing (a quarter-inch steel ball at 150 to 350 feet per second, depending on the device). Anything that grinds, hammers, cuts, or spins should be paired with Z87+ glasses, not plain Z87. Check the frame; the rating is molded right into it.

What safety glasses do not do is seal. Debris and liquid come in from the sides, the top, and underneath. That's the limit that defines the next tier.

2. Sealed goggles — the D3 marking

When the hazard is liquid — battery electrolyte, brake fluid, brake cleaner, degreaser, anything you spray or pour — open-frame glasses are the wrong tool no matter how good the impact rating. You want a sealed goggle marked D3, which is the Z87.1 code for droplet and splash protection. A D3 goggle seals to the face and uses indirect venting, so a splash can't run around the edge and into the eye. If you're filling a battery, spraying carb or brake cleaner up into a caliper, or working under a vehicle with fluids dripping toward your face, this is the tier — not shop glasses.

3. Face shield — over the glasses, never instead of them

For grinding, cut-off wheels, wire wheels, and bench grinding, a full face shield protects the rest of your face from the shower of sparks and fragments these tools throw. But a face shield is a secondary barrier, not a primary one — it can lift, and fragments can get under it. Always wear Z87+ safety glasses underneath. The shield saves your face; the glasses save your eyes.

4. Welding — a different standard entirely

None of the above protects against the arc. Welding produces intense ultraviolet and infrared light that burns the surface of the eye — "arc eye" or "welder's flash" — a painful, temporary corneal burn that shows up hours later. Welding requires a helmet or goggles with the correct shade number for the process and amperage. A shop face shield or safety glasses are useless here and dangerous if they give a false sense of security. If you're welding, the eye protection is the welding helmet, full stop.

The jobs that fool people

Two jobs cause a surprising share of eye injuries because they feel harmless: working under a vehicle (rust, dirt, and fluid fall straight down into upturned eyes — wear sealed goggles, not open glasses), and using a wire wheel or wire brush (individual wires break off and fly at eye height constantly — face shield plus Z87+ glasses, every time). Neither feels dangerous. Both routinely put people in urgent care.

Hand protection — match the glove to the hazard

There's no universal glove. A glove that's right for handling used oil is useless against a sheet-metal edge, and a cut-resistant glove offers no barrier against solvent. Pick by what the job does to a hand.

Disposable nitrile — for fluids and chemicals

For anything wet — oil changes, brake fluid, coolant, degreaser, fuel-system work — wear disposable nitrile gloves. Nitrile resists petroleum products far better than latex or vinyl, and it doesn't trigger latex allergies. Buy them thicker than the medical grade (6–8 mil is a good shop weight); they resist tearing on rough parts and last longer. This matters more than it looks: used motor oil and many solvents are absorbed through skin, and used oil contains compounds recognized as carcinogenic. The glove isn't about staying clean. It's a barrier between chemicals and your bloodstream.

One caution — nitrile disposables offer permeation resistance, not immunity. Aggressive solvents like brake cleaner will eventually pass through. If a glove gets saturated, change it; don't work all afternoon in the same soaked pair.

Cut-resistant gloves — for edges and blades

Reaching behind a radiator support, pulling trim, deburring metal, or working a razor blade or gasket scraper is where hands get cut. Cut-resistant gloves are rated on the ANSI/ISEA 105 scale from A1 (lightest) to A9 (highest), based on the grams of force needed to cut through the material. For most automotive sheet-metal and trim work, an A3 to A5 glove is the sensible range — enough protection to matter without the stiffness of the heaviest levels. These use fibers like HPPE or aramid and often have a nitrile-coated palm for grip. Remember that cut-resistant does not mean puncture-proof or cut-proof; it raises the threshold, it doesn't remove the risk.

Mechanics gloves — for grip and abrasion

General-purpose mechanics gloves (synthetic leather palm, fabric back) are for knuckle protection, grip, and abrasion on ordinary wrenching. They're comfortable and fine for most bolt-turning, but understand what they aren't: they're not a meaningful chemical barrier and not rated cut protection unless the label specifically says so. Good for a brake job's mechanical steps; wrong for handling the brake cleaner.

Leather — for heat and welding

For handling hot parts, using a torch, or welding, wear leather. Leather resists heat and spatter that would melt or ignite synthetic gloves. Welding gloves specifically are longer-cuffed to protect the wrist and forearm from spatter and UV. Never substitute nitrile or a synthetic mechanics glove near heat — synthetics can melt onto skin.

Stop — gloves and spinning tools

To say it a second time, because it's the injury that ends careers: take gloves off before you touch a bench grinder, wire wheel, drill press, lathe, or any rotating spindle. The fabric is what gets caught, and once it's caught there is no reaction time. This is not a preference — it's how the tool works. Bare hands, safety glasses, face shield: yes. Gloves: never.

None of this is expensive relative to a repair, and none of it is expensive relative to a trip to urgent care. The discipline isn't in owning the gear — it's in reaching for the right piece before the job that needs it, especially the small job that doesn't feel like it does.
