Rear Bumper and Swing-Out Tire Carrier for the 4Runner

Difficulty 3/52–3 hrs$899–17992010-2024

A steel rear bumper on the 4Runner improves departure angle, adds proper recovery points, and — when combined with a swing-out carrier — moves the spare tire off the interior floor and frees the cargo area entirely.

The 5th gen 4Runner carries its spare tire under the rear cargo floor, consuming significant interior space and adding weight above the cargo line. An aftermarket rear bumper with an integrated swing-out tire carrier moves the spare outside the vehicle, mounts it on a hinged arm that swings clear of the rear gate, and reclaims that floor space for gear. For overland rigs where the back of the 4Runner is a living space or gear storage system, this is a meaningful quality-of-life upgrade alongside the trail protection benefits.

Departure angle improvement is 3°–5° over the OEM bumper. The factory rear bumper hangs lower than a steel replacement and has rounded corners that snag on exit obstacles. A straight-cut or notched steel bumper rides higher on the frame and presents a cleaner exit profile. The 4Runner's IFS-front and live-axle-rear combination makes departure angle more of a real-world constraint than approach angle on most trail scenarios — a high departure angle protects the bumper and rear skid from rock strikes as the truck exits ledges and steep transitions.

Swing-out tire carriers for 33" tires are bolt-on on most designs. Carriers for 35" tires require more robust pivot hardware and often a reinforced bumper base — verify the carrier's rated tire diameter before ordering. Backup camera retention varies by bumper design; most quality bumpers include a camera relocation mount. Confirm camera mount compatibility for your 4Runner's specific camera type (OEM housing shape varies by year).

Ranch Hand is a budget-tier steel bumper option — the quality is adequate for overland use, but the design is less refined and departure angle improvement is more modest than CBI or Relentless designs. It's a usable option for builds where budget is the primary constraint.
