Recovery Gear Starter Kit for the 4Runner

Difficulty 1/51–2 hrs$250–6002010-2024

A kinetic rope, D-rings, traction boards, and a snatch block cover most trail recovery situations — and the 4Runner's factory front tow hooks are genuine recovery points, which streamlines the attachment question compared to some other IFS platforms.

The 5th gen 4Runner includes factory tow hooks in the front that are frame-mounted, painted in body color, and often overlooked. These are functional recovery points for straight-ahead pull recovery with a kinetic rope. Attach a D-ring shackle (3/4" rated, like the Rhino USA units) to the factory hook eye and you have a legitimate front attachment point — no steel bumper required for basic recoveries. For rear recovery, the OEM receiver hitch is the correct attachment point; use a hitch-mount D-ring receiver shackle to connect a rope.

The kinetic rope is the most important item in any recovery kit. Bubba Rope's Gator-Jaw 7/8" 20' kinetic rope stores energy during extension and releases it as a smooth forward pull — far more effective than a static tow strap and much gentler on the recovery points. Static straps shock-load the anchor points on a stuck vehicle; kinetic ropes don't. A snatch block doubles the pull force when rigged as a mechanical advantage system — essential for deep mud or heavy-vehicle recoveries where a single vehicle pull isn't enough.

Maxtrax traction boards are the self-recovery go-to for sand, mud, and snow. Dig out the wheel, slide the board under the drive tire, and drive off it. The 4Runner's locked rear differential (on Trail and TRD Pro trims) combined with Maxtrax turns single-vehicle self-recovery into a reliable procedure even in soft terrain. If your 4Runner is an SR5 or Limited without a locker, Maxtrax plus controlled throttle will still get you out of most situations where only one wheel is buried.

Keep the recovery kit in a dedicated bag or box where it can be reached without unloading the cargo area. ARB's recovery bag includes everything in a single roll-top bag with organized pockets for each item — a practical solution for 4Runners where the cargo floor is already occupied by gear.
