Skid Plate Kit — Engine, Transfer Case, and Fuel Tank

Difficulty 2/52–4 hrs$399–9992018-2024

The JL's underbody layout is different enough from the JK's that JK skids will not fit — this is not a fitment approximation, it's a flat incompatibility. Every skid plate on a JL must be JL-spec.

Jeep updated the JL's frame geometry, crossmember locations, and underbody component placement significantly compared to the JK. The oil pan position, transfer case mounting, and fuel tank skid integration points all moved. If you have JK skids in your garage, they are not transferable. This is worth knowing before buying used parts.

The JL Rubicon ships with a factory aluminum skid package that provides basic coverage — better than nothing, but thin and prone to deformation on genuine rock contact. The Sport and Sahara have no factory skids worth mentioning. Aftermarket steel skids address both the coverage gaps and the material upgrade.

The Teraflex JL skid kit at $499 covers the primary three: the transfer case belly area, the engine/oil pan, and the front crossmember. It's 3/16" steel plate, laser-cut for JL-specific fitment, and the mount points align with factory hardware. This is the most popular mid-range option because the price is fair and the coverage addresses the components most commonly damaged on trail.

Rock Hard 4x4's JL system at $699 adds coverage to the areas the Teraflex kit leaves exposed — specifically the rear areas near the fuel tank and the front diff on equipped trims. The extra coverage is worth the $200 premium if your trails involve sustained belly exposure rather than occasional hits. GenRight's full underbelly kit at $899 is the comprehensive choice for rock-crawl builds — every vulnerable surface has plate coverage, and the kit is designed to work as a unified deflection surface rather than individual plates with gaps.

Rubicon Express at $449 is the value option — slightly thinner plate than Rock Hard, adequate for mild to moderate trail use, and competitively priced. For a JL that's primarily an overland rig with occasional trail excursions, the Rubicon Express kit is a defensible choice.
